Lesson 1: Comfort in Uncomfortable Trials

Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 1:1-11.

Key Verses: 2 Corinthians 1:3 and 4.

Theme: "God's gracious comfort makes it possible to respond to trials with peace and confidence."

Overview: The Apostle Paul offered praise to God for His gracious comfort. Paul explained that trials never exhaust God's comfort. Because He comforts us in our trials, we can respond to them properly.

Reflections:
Grace is divine favor bestowed upon us. Peace is the rest made possible by grace.

As followers of Christ, He is our only true source of lasting peace during the storms of life because He is "the Father of mercies" and "the God of all comfort."

Purposes for sufferings might include opportunities for us to help others, be reassured of Christ's ever presence in our lives, be an example for others, rely whole-heartedly upon God, pray, and give thanks.

Why do you value grace? peace?

What is significant about God as being the God of all comfort?

Application: Respond to trials with peace and confidence.

Assignment: Share how God's grace impacted you during trials and Bible verses that provided you comfort.

My favorite quote from this morning's Sunday school class was, "Grace is the essence of faith." It was interesting to note that the God of all comfort is also our sole source of true comfort in trials.

I appreciate your prayers for my dad and his company, which suffered a major chemical fire on Friday morning that destroyed much of the property.

Verses that comfort me in trials include Philippians 4:19, "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus" and Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."

While growing up without a father, living in a strange land, learning a new language and culture, it was difficult at times and confusing in private moments of the heart. Yet throughout the challenges of adolescence and teenage years, my savior Jesus Christ, “the God of all comfort,” poured His marvelous grace on me so I can dare to dream and be motivated to achieve great things for Him.

In moments of darkness and despair, I found solace in the words of Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God. . .” Indeed, we serve a God who is all powerful, knowing, and present. His attributes of greatness and goodness gives us the confidence to focus on eternal values and make a godly impact on the world.
